Agenda
  • Introductions
  • Wiki Spaces
  • 2012-2013 work plan/priorities
  • Tech Champs
  • PD Feb 19, All Tech
  • Google Training

At least 90 minutes of PD at each meeting to build Tech Champ skills.

John Wahl:
  • Overview of Wikispaces; Hawaiian word means “quick” and the tech working group wikispace, how to access etc.
  • Wikispaces.com
  • jsdtechnologycommittee.wikispaces.com
  • Can email wiki link and minutes to school staff to share work and discussion of the tech champs and committee
  • Group worked on accessing the wikispace and refreshing how to upload and post docs etc
  • Cool apps and links can be posted on the wiki to share with staff in district; quick links and info not just curriculum and not vetted specifically
  • Alaska Digital Sandbox connection to our wiki links and has vetted curricular resources (Roxy will talk about that with us at another meeting).
  • One disadvantage to a wiki is if we try to edit at the same time as google doc has more application for multiple users at once
  • Barb Kreher invited to share how to set up a wiki at another tech champs meeting

Laury reviewed agenda and action plans from last year and what has been accomplished to date. Reminded we will need to have new action plan/update at the end of this school year. We need to stay focused on the goals.

Action Plans Accomplished:
  • special funding for technology for three schools
  • line item refresh cycle in the district budget
  • infrastructure improvements happening now, this year and will consume 1/3 of the general fund infrastructure improvements
  • Plan to go to legislature again for capital request again for tech improvements
  • Google implementation happening over the school year, school by school, person by person
  • Adopted ISTE Nets as tech curriculum, it is updated ongoing and no need to have separate district technology; need to get this noted in the district website as adopted technology curriculum (talk to Patty N too)
  • Tech Champs: regular training and support; sharing PD with staff in building; each school gets one tech champ; paid stipend for their time at Saturday meeting, get up to $500 to get technology to use; could use $ to go to ASTE; encouraged tech champs to share tech PD each week or bi-monthly with building staff
  • Sharing of tech resources to consider: Pico mini pocket projector that can be used with ipad, apple TV
  • District inservice: Feb 19 - tech training district-wide; presenter proposals will be coming out soon and paid planning time; inviting this group to join the planning process;
  • Site-based tech committees at each school; tech champs identified in this role
  • Piloting small blended learning model: FD doing this with E2020 (George Gress and Sandy Paulke); 60 licenses available after 1 pm each day in the high schools -14 middle school courses available and can pick up 9 more classes and possibly high school or elementary
  • Monthly OIS reports to board about technology provided
  • Board member not needed at this working group as more governance role and not internal workings at this time
  • Teacher and student surveys: held by law to do surveys
  • Online learning opportunities - need to form online curriculum working group in process of development
  • Digital Citizenship Curriculum, internet safety required; identify acceptable internet safety curriculum and social/emotional curriculum happening for formal curricular adoption process by December (every kid every year required by law to have students go through this curricular requirement); this will be sent to all staff to be invited to work group on this
  • Database of rating ed apps (to do)
  • Database of local teachers tech expertise (to do)
  • Revised district form for tech use was updated this summer and working to go paperless

Tech Champ Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Forming tech committee at each building site
  • Offering drop in tech PD modules at each site
  • 2 staff meetings/month with quick tech hit at HBV
  • Record those sessions with screen capture device to share with those who were not there or through the site wiki
  • By default Macs can record their screen
  • Take notes on what you are helping others with as more than one person may need that learning too and encourage those to share with another person so staff do not become sooo dependent on that one tech champ
  • Can tech champs share training modules with each other through wiki
  • Can be facilitators for others in building
  • Vertical alignment of tech champs teachings
  • Make sure about referring those to the help line and caution about tech dependency on one person in each building
  • Tech tips and topics: Staff tech champ mini-lessons and topics on the wiki posted by tech champs to capture what is happening around district

PD options for the work group:
  • Google migration for those not moved over yet
  • Advanced google training for those who have been migrated to gmail

District pays about $7000 for bandwith, $180,000 a year to ACS.

Today’s learning - share:
Lynnette: learning gmail inbox tips and creating folders and labels, willing to share with colleagues at site
Pam: learned how to add calendars to calendar and share with others
Dave: tips on email labels; set up google account to share with parents and students; inside scoop on using ipads and programs willing to share with others at next meeting trainings
Carin: gmail, using track pad to enlarge and shrink screen
Ray: not to fear migration; labels the same as folders - sort of
John: calendar function fixed yesterday to share with outside gmail users
Chris: more communication with staff everywhere
Janna: gmail, chat new feature and share strategies with school colleagues
Rebecca: rediscovered she loves teaching; email can be tagged with multiple labels and more button allows you to add email to task and a calendar event
Julie: using folders, filters and labels and wiki
Lisa: gmail calendar, how to send school newsletter to parents through email
Rick: gmail transition is good, google doc use, and wiki’s
Carolyn: gmail transition is so much better than apple mail
